Christmas diorama 2016

An evolving story

Following the success of the 2015 Easter diorama (a model representing a scene with three-dimensional figures) displayed at the front door of St Andrew's Wallace Green for the very successful Flower Festival, the artist (Ray Nicholson) had a germ of an idea for Christmas.

This time it would be an evolving scene over the three Sundays before Christmas, starting with Mary and Joseph on their journey to Bethlehem; then the Kings appear following the star; the angel Gabriel materialising before the shepherds; and finally on Christmas Day, the nativity itself with all the characters coming together.

The start was to build the scene itself, cleverly incorporating the shepherds field at the top of a hill, which was then removed to show the inn and the barn.

All the characters were handcrafted from clay then individually painted.

Definitely a labour of love and fitted in amongst other more mundane work it was successfully displayed over Advent 2016.
